'UMNOism' more dangerous than Wahhabism – Tuan Ibrahim

Jul 29: A PAS leader has shot back at the government's allegations of a terror threat linked to Muslim scholars who allegedly espoused 'Wahhabism', saying that 'UMNOism' is a greater danger to Muslims in the country.

PAS information chief Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (pic), reacting to the recent briefing to muftis by the National Security Council, explained that Wahhabi teachings only differed in some branches of Islamic knowledge but not over Islam's guiding principles.

Tuan Ibrahim reminded that certain teachings of 'Wahhabism', a name used on the teachings of 18th century Muslim reformer Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab during the early years of the Saudi dynasty in the Arab peninsula, were widely adapted not only in its place of birth in present day Saudi Arabia but also in other Muslim countries.

“At least the Saudis have implemented hududqisas and ta'zir [methodologies of Islamic criminal law), but Malaysia is still struggling to find a formula to overcome crime in the country,” remarked the Pahang PAS commissioner.

Tuan Ibrahim said UMNO's history of sidelining Islam, including using religion for narrow political purposes, should place the party in a worse position than 'Wahhabism' which it depicted as dangerous.

“Isn’t it proven that UMNOism which is based on 'pragmatism' is actually more dangerous than Wahhabism?” he asked.

'A copycat act'
It was earlier reported that the NSC had placed several junior Muslim scholars who joined UMNO last year in a government terror watch list.

Also in the watch list are Perlis Mufti Juanda Jaya and his predecessor Asri Zainul Abidin.

A reliable source earlier told Harakahdaily that the junior scholars, known as UMNO's 'young ulama', had been informed of their impending arrest last year under the Internal Security Act, which in the past had also been used against followers of the Shi'ite school of thought. Sensing this, the group decided to join UMNO in a ceremony arranged by former Perlis Menteri Besar Shahidan Kassim. Asri however opted to stay out despite speculation that he would join UMNO.

MORE UMNO THAN UMNO? ... Fathul Bari, one of the 'young ulama' of UMNO, during a recent session condemning Bersih
Recently, the group, led by one Fathul Bari, had been tasked by UMNO with countering Pakatan Rakyat and its support for electoral reforms coalition Bersih 2.0.

On the latest allegations of 'Wahhabi terror', Tuan Ibrahim said it was nothing new and was a replication of the US's campaign against Islamic movements.

"Does the Home Minister also plan to put them under Emergency Ordinance, as done on the six PSM (Parti Sosialis Malaysia) activists,* all of whom until today have not been told of what threat they posed to the country over their support to Bersih?" he quipped.
