I would like to comment on an editorial published by the Jakarta Post, "Malaysia: Rich but not free".
Malaysia is “not rich”. The elite are rich. There is a misconception that richness of a country in monetary and development of a country is “one and the same”. Fatal mistake and this is far from the truth.
The twin towers, the F-1 Racing Circuit, Putra Jaya are all white elephants in Malaysia – these were the results of massive contracts given to UMNO cronies to make money. They now sit in idle waste as the Pyramids in Egypt - one man’s ego!
Mind you, the cronies also include Chinese and Indians, the former being the biggest winners and patrons of UMNO. The top 10 billionaires in Malaysia are Chinese and strong supporters of the Malay government.
Coming back to my definition of richness. A “rich” country will have a good education system, the respect for human rights, a respect for the rule of law, good health benefits, taking care of the aged, poor and needy and everything that is required to protect the man on the street. In Malaysia, there is no such thing. There are laws made to protect the government-so politicians who are involved in murder, rape, corruption, smuggling, cheating among others walk away with no sanctions.
They are no accountable to anything or anyone-they are GODS! Mind you these are Minister of the Malaysian cabinet!!! So is this richness? Is this the so called "Wawasan 2020"?
There is the Internal Security Act, the Societies Act, the Printing and Publications Act, the Sedition Act and so on that protects the government from scrutiny. So there is no transparency, good governance, separation of powers or the ability to see what is to be corrected in Malaysian society. Malaysia is a Police State.
Even if readers feel that I am wrong and they are entitled to make mistakes in their opinions, Malaysia is financially broke. Top Malaysian economists who left the country and other experts say that the oil is drying out and inflation added together with political unrest is bankrupting Malaysia. Investors don’t want to touch Malaysia for fear of a bad investment and corruption.
Malaysia is indeed very poor!
