Railwaymen to picket asking for their chief’s resignation

Hundreds of KTMB employees, fed up with the train company's increasing losses, will stage a picket on Friday asking the KTM chief to step down.

KUALA LUMPUR: Embattled railwaymen, fed up with a seemingly inefficient boss, will picket in front of the KTM headquarters demanding that their president resign.
Railwaymen’s Union of Malaya (RUM) president Abdul Razak Md Hassan blamed Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) president Dr Aminuddin Adnan for the train company’s increasing losses.
“Our (Inter)city, cargo and Komuter (departments) have all seen a loss of revenue,” Abdul told reporters at RUM’s Brickfields headquarters.
He also said that KTMB appeared to have a schism of power, with seemingly two heads at the top.
“There is a schism in the duty of briefing KTMB’s board of directors. Both the KTMB’s cargo chief executive officer (Elias Kadir) and the president report on the state of the company to the board.”
“But they appear to be on separate courses,” he said, and added that the Finance Ministry, which supervised KTMB, was well aware of the matter.
On this, he questioned the government’s move to extend Aminuddin’s contract to July 31 2013. He has been KTMB president since Aug 1, 2009.
Unhappy with the decision, he said that RUM had sent letters to Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and the Finance Ministry over the matter. The union’s concerns however, Abdul said, were ignored.
Similar requests through Umno channels were also ignored.
Abdul said that RUM will organise a picket demanding Aminuddin’s resignation in front of the KTMB headquarters this Friday at 6pm.
This is not the first time that the union has clashed with the KTMB president.
Last year, RUM railed against the company for it’s plan to turn its Electric Train Service (ETS) into a private subsidiary, instead of running it as a department within KTMB.
The union then organised a picket in front of KTMB’s headquarters in July, seeing an attendance of over 200 members and other employees.
After this event, KTMB scrapped it’s plan to turn the ETS into a private subsidiary.
Abdul expected to see hundreds of KTM employees showing up for this Friday’s picket.
He also added that only KTMB employees not working on that day would show up for the picket, adding that RUM did not want to “disturb” the company’s day-to-day operations.
