Aug 4: Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has personally called Pastor Daniel Ho of the Damansara Utama Methodist Church in Petaling Jaya to express regrets over a raid by several officers from the Selangor Islamic Department (JAIS).
Saying the state government viewed the incident seriously, Khalid (left) said he had instructed the department, which in the past often collided with the state administration on several issues, to explain their action last night.
"I told him that the state has instructed JAIS to provide a full report detailing the incident, including their justifications for their actions that night. I hope to meet the pastor again once the report is completed," Khalid said in a statement.
Last night, JAIS officers accompanied by police raided the church's building at the Dream Centre during a dinner event. The officers claimed they were "acting on complaint", and later took down particulars of Muslim guests at the dinner.
The raid by JAIS is not the first time the department has angered Pakatan Rakyat state officials.
Despite being a state religious body, its top officers are known to be remnants of the past Barisan Nasional administration.
In November 2009, the department invited condemnations from state leaders over its arrest of former Perlis mufti Dr Asri Zainal Abidin for delivering a talk "without permit".
Last year, state leaders vehemently opposed the Federal government's decision to promote JAIS chairman Mohammed Khusrin Munawi as state secretary.
