Aug 18: The government has been warned not to resort to any "hanky-panky" that can undermine national security in the current nationwide exercise to register illegal immigrants under the so-called '6P' amnesty programme.
PAS vice president Salahuddin Ayub (above) said the government should not take advantage of the programme to continue registering new voters after awarding them instant citizenship, as exposed by several quarters recently.
According to Salahuddin, although PAS the 6P amnesty programme would benefit the country and foreign workers, there were fears about "hidden hands" from certain syndicates serving the interest of UMNO-BN in preparing for the general election.
According to reports, some 1,928,495 foreign workers and illegal immigrants had registered under the 6P amnesty programme, which ends this weekend.
However, the exercise has been marred by instances of labour agents overcharging their service.
Some 336 appointed agents, according to one report, have raked in millions during the registration drive, with some agents charging as much as RM2,000 to a foreign worker to get legal permit.
Letter of allegiance to UMNO?
Fuelling worries about the programme earlier this week is a revelation of a 'letter of pledge' by PKR's Women chief Zuraida Kamaruddin (right), which she claimed was proof that the amnesty drive was a plan to help BN secure votes in the general election.
The Ampang member of parliament said foreigners were forced to sign a letter stating their allegiance to UMNO-BN.
The alleged letter states:
“Bismillahhirahmanirrahim. Wallahi Wabillahi Watawallahi. I (name) in the name of Allah pledge and promise to be loyal to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Sultans and Malaysia. I / my husband / my wife / my children will undividedly support and vote UMNO / Barisan Nasional (BN). I will also continue to fight for Islam and the Malay race. My family and I promise to keep this SECRET, and if I break it I will pay the price.”
Zuraida said the letter was discovered during a follow up investigation into electoral irregularities in Sepang, Shah Alam and Hulu Selangor, and urged the registration drive of foreign workers be immediately halted.
“If the leadership of UMNO-Barisan Nasional still has some dignity left, they must stop this treachery immediately before more evidence is presented to the people," said Zuraida.
She also called on UMNO's partners in BN to state their stand, adding that silence would mean they approve the acts of betrayal on the country's sovereignty.
